Who is La Catrina?
La Catrina — the elegant skeleton in a wide-brimmed hat — was created by illustrator José Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s as a satirical commentary on Mexican society, and later embraced by muralist Diego Rivera as a symbol of Día de los Muertos. She reminds us that death is the great equalizer, regardless of wealth or status.
Today, elaborately costumed Catrinas are a centerpiece of DODFest — each dress a work of art built by hand, often over months, and each one telling its own story.
